What is a smart textile? Through this body of work we challenge the accepted idea that smart requires synthetic materials or e-textile components. Instead responsive behaviours are programmed into the knitted fabric itself through a deep understanding of knit structure and materials. Colour and pattern change is coded into knitted fabrics using light theory. Shape change is programmed into knitted fabric using insight derived from plant biology. These approaches produce fabrics that are smart, using techniques that are sustainable.
